After breakfast, depart Arusha around 8:00 am for Machame Gate (1,490m) — a scenic 2-hour drive through lush coffee plantations and mountain villages.
At the park gate, complete registration formalities while the porters prepare your gear. Begin your trek through the dense rainforest, where towering trees are draped in moss and colobus monkeys leap through the canopy.

After lunch near the Lava Tower, descend through the Barranco Valley — a dramatic landscape of giant senecio trees and rocky outcrops — to reach Barranco Camp (3,950m).
Though you end the day at nearly the same elevation you began, the experience at higher altitude greatly aids acclimatization.

After an early breakfast, begin one of the most exciting parts of the climb the Barranco Wall. This near-vertical rock face looks daunting, but it’s a fun, hands-on scramble requiring no technical climbing skills.
Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Heim Glacier and the vast plains below. The trail then descends slightly into the Karanga Valley, winding through rocky terrain above the clouds.
Arrive at Karanga Camp (3,959m) by mid-afternoon for lunch, relaxation, and another vital night of acclimatization.

Essential Kilimanjaro FAQs
While you don’t need to be an elite athlete, a good level of cardiovascular fitness is required. Training with hikes and stair-climbing for 2–3 months before your Arusha arrival is highly recommended.
The best climbing windows are the dry seasons: January–March and June–October. Your Rongai Route is particularly good during the slight rainy seasons because the northern side of the mountain receives less precipitation.
